A földbirtok- és üzemszerkezetet befolyásoló tényezõk hatásvizsgálata Nyugat-Dunántúl gazdaságainak körében AgEcon
Kacz, Karoly; Koltai, Judit Petra; Salamon, Ildiko.
Both private farms and corporations from the region were included in the two questionnaire surveys as part of an OTKA research [Investigating relations of farm size measurement and comparison on territorial as well as SGM basis, in the West-Transdanubian Region (T 048960)] carried out in our Institute about relations of farm size measurement in the West-Transdanubian Region. As part of the questionnaire survey we investigated – among other things – the main factors affecting land– and farm structure with entrepreneurial reaction-analysis, to define the possible region-specific characteristics. For both surveys the data basis of the county offices of MoARD has been used, including private farms operating on more than 1 hectare agricultural land (according...

A magyar agrárgazdaság napjainkban AgEcon
Kapronczai, Istvan.
Áchim L. András parasztpolitikus a nagybirtok elleni harc jelentős vezetője a XIX–XX. század fordulóján. A cikk a halálának centenáriuma alkalmából tartott emlékkonferencián elhangzott előadás alapján készült azzal az igénnyel, hogy bemutassa napjaink magyar agrárgazdaságát, és megkíséreljen párhuzamot vonni a 100 évvel ezelőtti kor, illetve a mai agrárgazdasággal szemben álló kihívások között. A 100 évvel ezelőtti viszonyok és a maiak között meglepő párhuzamok rajzolódtak ki: földosztás, a nagybirtokok parcellázása; a kisparasztok (családi gazdaságok) preferálása a nagybirtokkal szemben; szegény emberek (munkanélküliek) állami munkába történő bevonása; igazságos adó- (támogatási) rendszer igénye; törekvés hatásos érdekképviseletek létrehozására. Mindezek...

Agrárcenzusok szerepe az agrárinformációs rendszerben (1895-2010) AgEcon
Laczka, Eva.
A rendszeres mezőgazdasági adatgyűjtések közel kétszáz éves múltra tekintenek vissza. A nagy volumenű munka...

Agricultural Contracting Update, 2005 AgEcon
MacDonald, James M.; Korb, Penelope J..
More than half of all transactions for U.S. agricultural products are still conducted through spot market exchanges, in which commodities are bought and sold in open market transactions for immediate delivery. But a growing share of U.S. farm production is produced and sold under agricultural contracts. Such contracts between farmers and their buyers are reached prior to harvest (or before the completion stage for livestock) and govern the terms under which products are transferred from the farm. The shift of production to contracting coincides with shifts of production to larger farms. Contracts are far more likely to be used on large farms than on small ones. Marketing and production contracts covered 41 percent of the value of U.S. agricultural...

Agricultural Contracting Update: Contracts in 2008 AgEcon
MacDonald, James M.; Korb, Penelope J..
Marketing and production contracts covered 39 percent of the value of U.S. agricultural production in 2008, up from 36 percent in 2001, and a substantial increase over 28 percent in 1991 and 11 percent in 1969. However, aggregate contract use has stabilized in recent years and no longer suggests a strong trend. Contracts between farmers and their buyers are reached prior to harvest (or before the completion stage for livestock)and govern the terms under which products are transferred from the farm. Contracts are far more likely to be used on large farms than on small farms, and they form one element in a package of risk management tools available to farmers. Production contracts are used widely in livestock production, while marketing contracts are...

America's Diverse Family Farms: 2010 Edition AgEcon
Hoppe, Robert A.; Banker, David E.; MacDonald, James M..
American farms vary widely in size and other characteristics, but farming is still an industry of family businesses. Ninety-eight percent of farms are family farms, and they account for 82 percent of farm production. Small family farms make up most of the U.S. farm count and hold the majority of farm assets, but they produce a modest share of U.S. farm output. In contrast, large-scale family farms and nonfamily farms—only 12 percent of all farms—account for 84 percent of farm production. Small farms are less profitable than large-scale farms, on average, and the households operating them tend to rely on off-farm income for their livelihood. Because small-farm households receive most of their income from off-farm work, general economic policies—such as tax...

America's Diverse Family Farms: Structure and Finances AgEcon
Hoppe, Robert A.; MacDonald, James M.; Banker, David E..
American farms vary widely in size and other characteristics, but farming is still an industry of family businesses. Ninety-eight percent of farms are family farms, and they account for 86 percent of farm production. Very small farms are growing in number, and small family farms continue to own most farmland. But production is shifting toward very large family farms. Because small-farm households receive most of their income from off-farm work, general economic policies—such as tax policy or economic development policy—can be as important to them as traditional farm policy.

Analysis of Farm Development in Dutch Agriculture and Horticulture AgEcon
Bremmer, Johan; Oude Lansink, Alfons G.J.M.; Olson, Kent D.; Baltussen, Willy H.M.; Huirne, Ruud B.M..
This paper analysis the effects of farmer characteristics, farm structure and farm performance on farm renewal and farm growth. The data set used in this research consists of panel data from the Dutch Farm Accountancy Data Network of farms specialized in plant production extended with a data from survey among those farms. Probit models were used to determine the likelihood of the changes. Results show that the degree of mechanization increases the probability of farm growth and farm renewal. Family labour input and solvency have a negative impact on farm growth. Farm size is positively correlated with farm renewal. No indications of the influence of the life cycle have been found.

Changes in agricultural holdings structure during the transition period in Slovenia AgEcon
Udovc, Andrej.
The paper presents the socio-economic restructuring of Slovene agricultural holding due to different transitional processes, such as denationalisation and privatisation, as the biggest property right transformation processes in Slovenia during transition period, as well as agricultural property transactions and will discuss other factors (loss of jobs, unemployment, accession etc) which influenced the recent development. At the end also the future possible development trends in agricultural holdings structure are presented.

CHANGES IN LAND UTILIZATION IN HUNGARY SINCE THE TRANSITION AgEcon
Magda, Robert.
The paper discusses the fluctuation of the proportion of cultivation, the development of agrarian operating and organizational structure, the separation of estate tenancy and land use, along with the change of law. In the backward areas and territories with adverse endowment, further questions remain open during the temporal changes of land use. My study is not only limited to the description of changes, but also aims to illustrate general conclusions relating to the preferred structure and proportion of land use in Hungary.

Characteristics of Canada's Diverse Farm Sector AgEcon
Niekamp, Deborah.
Much of the research in the past on farm structure and economic well-being focused almost exclusively on farms based on their size, their contribution to total agricultural production, or national net farm income. These aggregate measures do not by themselves adequately explain how well the farm is functioning. Confidence in highly aggregated measures of financial performance in agriculture needs to be tempered with an understanding of the diversity that exists within the farm sector. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) developed a farm typology, to better explain why particular groups respond differently. The AAFC typology classifies farms into more homogeneous groups based on five factors: organizational structure (non-family farms) age (retirement...

Did the Baby Boom Cause the Farm-Size Boom? AgEcon
Roberts, Michael J.; Key, Nigel D..
Growing farm size has generally been explained by technological advances that have allowed farmers to substitute capital for labor. Another possible factor in explaining recent farm size is the demographic shift: the age distribution of farmers has shifted to the right and older farmers generally operate larger farms than younger farmers. This paper uses data from the 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, and 2002 Agricultural Censuses to examine the relative importance of the demographic shift versus technological factors in explaining overall farm size growth. Results indicate that farm sizes tend to increase with age and that, holding age constant, the typical farm-size has increased over time for all ages, presumably due to technological change. The...

DUALITY OF FARM STRUCTURE IN TRANSITION AGRICULTURE: THE CASE OF MOLDOVA AgEcon
Lerman, Zvi; Cimpoies, Dragos.
The duality of farm structure in Moldova is manifested by the existence of a relatively small number of large corporate farms at one extreme and a very large number of small and very small family farms at the other. “Medium-sized” family farms, the backbone of any market agriculture, virtually do not exist in Moldova. Moldovan agriculture is characterized by a much greater concentration of land in large farms than agriculture in market economies. The small individual farms on the whole are more productive and more efficient than the large corporate farms. They produce higher incomes for rural families than corporate farms. The main conclusion of the paper is that land should be allowed to flow from large corporate farms to small family farms through the...

Factors of Efficiency Change of Assets on the EU-15 and Hungarian Farms from 1990s AgEcon
Takacs, Istvan; Baranyai, Zsolt; Takacs, Emese.
Efficiency of farm assets is a very important factor of competitive production. It could be in strong correlation with profitability of economic activities. One of the most important factor of the farm assets is the fixed assets, and as a part of it, the equipment as well. An important factor of the farm asset value is the machinery, which depends on the amount of internal resources of farms and external financial resources i.e. governmental subsidies, bank loans. But, as it could be observed during the 1980s and 1990s on the farms of developed countries, the technical development was also a considerable factor of farming. This paper, based on the data of the FADN, and yearbooks of the HCSO, focuses on the investigation of some figures of the European...

FARM OPERATIONS FACING DEVELOPMENT: RESULTS FROM THE CENSUS LONGITUDINAL FILE AgEcon
Hoppe, Robert A.; Korb, Penelope J..
This paper examines farms in areas undergoing development, using a longitudinal file constructed by linking several agricultural censuses. Individual farms are followed over the 1982-97 period. Survival, exit, and entrance rates are presented for three types of farms: recreational, adaptive, and traditional. The three types of farms are located where one would expect. Traditional farms are concentrated in nonmetropolitan (nonmetro) counties, while adaptive farms are concentrated in metro core counties. Recreational farms are least common in nonmetro nonadjacent areas, where off-farm opportunities are fewest. The concentration of adaptive farms in metro core counties does not appear to be the result of these farms simply surviving an urban...

Farm Size Adjustment and Contract Regulation (I. #203/82): Evidence From an Italian Case Study AgEcon
Coppola, Adele; de Stefano, Francesco; Del Giudice, Teresa.
In Italy, the structure of farm has always shown remarkable elements of weakness. Among these, the small dimension, in terms of arable land, has represented one of the most difficult to resolve. The absence of a legislation that could favour jointness of the property have remarkably reduced the market of the land. In this scenario, a new law n. 203/1982 was lunched. Now farmers are considering rent land a possible strategy to increase hectares. The object of this paper is to analyse the situation of land contract in Campania Region. A better understanding of these topics should improve public policies for a better adjustment process.

Farm Structural Change in German Regions - An Empirical Analysis using Micro and Macro Data AgEcon
Zimmermann, Andrea; Heckelei, Thomas.
General economic developments as well as recent fundamental changes in the Common Agricultural Policy will likely impact significantly on the European farm structure. Although a decline of total farm numbers continues to be the general observation, important differences occur across regions and farm types. These differentiated developments and their determinants are of high relevance for policy impact assessment at the regional level. The main objective of the analysis provided in this paper is to empirically identify whether regionally specific characteristics account for differences in regional farm structure development. This is exemplarily shown for German FADN regions. As methodological approach a combined time series, cross-sectional Markov chain...

Gondolatok a birtokpolitikáról AgEcon
Nagy, Frigyes.
